Who are Digital Nomads? Pros and cons of being a digital nomad.
Are you familiar with people who constantly move from one place to another and work using technology and telecommunication? Have you observed how the economic crisis and lockdown have forced employees to work remotely?
With the evolution in the modern world, many unique and innovative things have become a part of life. One such thing is the lifestyle of a Digital Nomad, a term introduced in 1997 in the book Digital Nomad by Tsugio Makimoto and David Manners.
Nomadism is a way of life of people who do not permanently live in the same place but move regularly. These people are independent and free to change their location from time to time.
A Digital Nomad is a person who works and makes a living by using technology and telecommunication, rather than being physically present in his workplace or office. This lifestyle is possible nowadays only because of the low prices of internet access, management software, and long-distance communication tools available.
While it may seem that the lifestyle of a digital nomad is fun and exciting, there are several disadvantages as well.
In this blog, we will share some crucial points about the pros and cons of being one.
The Advantages
Opportunity To Travel
When you’re living a nomadic lifestyle, you’ll travel to different places from time to time and grasp bits and pieces of knowledge from everywhere you go. It might be a place in the mountains or the middle of the city, but travelling will let you experience life as it is and know the different cultures around the world.
Adaptability
Moving from one place to another means you’ll have the ability to adapt to different ways of living. Since it is not that at every site, you will find the same abode. Sometimes it may be comfortable, and other times not. Also, when you change locations, food and water quality differ; your surrounding as well.
It is not easy for everyone to adjust to things quickly, and as a nomad, you will have the advantage of adaptability.
Freedom from the traditional workplace lifestyle
You won’t have to wake up every day and see the same old faces that hang around in the office. Also, you won’t have to work only on your office desk since you’re a nomad and your ways are different.
In other words, we can say that you’ll be free from the traditional office lifestyle and move towards a unique and independent way of working.
More time to indulge in personal hobbies
As a digital nomad, you won’t have to work a nine-to-five job. So you will have time to entertain yourself with various hobbies that you like.
Because you’ll be travelling from place to place, you will have plentiful opportunities to do new things like playing sports, learning music, etc.
The Disadvantages
The Expense of Traveling
Although the average number of digital nomads earn a decent income, the expense of travelling to and forth is always something they have to face. The nomadic lifestyle is such that they are location-independent and continuous travelling is a part of their lives. Hence the expense of travelling.
Work Deadlines may vary from time to time.
You will have to deal with multiple clients at times, and therefore your work deadlines may vary.
Working in the corporate world may seem like a lot, and because most digital nomads are freelancers, the workload can stretch to extreme levels.
Dealing with Loneliness and Isolation
Although you will be able to meet new people when you travel from place to place, leaving them can lead to a feeling of loneliness and isolation for many nomads.
Leaving family and friends can be upsetting for many people trying to cope with the nomadic lifestyle.
Keeping balance
We cannot wholly call this a disadvantage, but there are many types of people. And for those who are light-hearted, organizing travelling, changing locations, and interacting with new people can be trouble.
Lack of stability
You can wrap up most of the disadvantages of being a digital nomad in this. There is never any stability in the life of a digital nomad, and the work experience constantly changes from place to place, along with other things like food, water, and the environment, as mentioned earlier.
With most of the points mentioned here, it is up to you to choose whether you wish to work as a digital nomad or not.
There are disadvantages and advantages, and if you are someone capable of handling the minus points of the nomadic lifestyle, all the best!
