Profession: Cyber Crime Investigator
Experience: 8 Years
Location: India, Delhi
It is indeed a great profession to work in, someone who loves technology and especially breaking it apart would fit just right in. One has to be a very keen observer to minute details, which gives you the ability to investigate with an eye for detail. I personally enjoy this work a lot, sometimes I feel I cant have enough of it ever.
I usually operate from Pune as the Cyber Crime Cell of Pune Cell is probably the most active and aware in comparison to other locations in my opinion. However I do get a lot of work from corporates and MNCs, but working with the law enforcement has its own charm.
The Hard part I feel about this profession as per my experience till now is :
Lack of a proper cyber crime investigation unit and knowledge in the Indian Ecosystem. It is true the industry is evolving and with the projects like Digital India and Aadhar, cybersecurity is now emerging to one of the major concerns for the government as well as corporates, cyber crime investigators are the need of the hour.
Things one might find interesting or feel “happy” about this profession is :
Well, criminal investigations are fun. Following someone’s track and knocking them down is indeed fun. Especially when the criminal thinks he is one step ahead of you and you go around and nab them, it is a feeling I am short of words to express.
Pros And Cons which I feel about this profession is :
Pros – You get good exposure in terms of legal proceedings and technical skills. You pretty much learn everything that is out there in tech and tear it apart as part of an investigation.
Cons – an investigation can sometimes go on for days and weeks and months while following tracks and investigating accurate reports. Because one mistake at the investigator end and the wrong person can end up behind bars, so you have to be absolutely sure about what you are doing.
My Personal Experience:
Cyber crime has reached a new level in last 2 years, people have accepted it as an actual problem and investigators operating in this area are now considered skilled. Prior to that anything to do with security and these activities were not considered a lucrative career option as it was assumed it is not a viable market.
I have worked with corporates, banks, media houses and law enforcement on various crime investigations which now have in-house incident response teams and security action force to deal with cybercrime issues and investigations help them implicate the victim in context to be charged and prosecuted.
Cyber Crime Investigation is not just technical or digital or information security services, a good investigator must know the legal aspects of the crime in the new age as well. Evidence handling, prosecuting, documentation and proof of crime can only be gathered accurately to be presented in the Court of Law based on the knowledge of proper laws.
